Range of Application of a New Design Method to Improve Energy Collection in Photovoltaic Installations

Carlos Armenta-Déu, F.J. Segura-Muñoz

Abstract

The paper focuses on the applicability of a new method, developed in previous study by the authors, to design a photovoltaic array based on the use of Geographical Information System (GIS) for medium size installations on the roof of the buildings of industrial conglomerates. The method has been developed for low latitudes, intertropical areas of the Earth surface, but it has been proved its applicability to higher latitudes. The new method has the advantage of optimizing the PV array layout improving the solar energy collection and generating the maximum electric energy. The validity of the application has been extended to PV panel inclinations up to vertical position, and for latitudes from 0º to 60º, what includes the majority of the Earth areas where photovoltaic arrays can be installed.
