Performance Investigation of Grating-based Photovoltaic Concentrator

Indra Vijay Singh, Madhu Yadav

Abstract

This paper elaborates the performance investigation of Grating based Photovoltaic Concentrator.Grating principle is used in the proposed concentrator photovoltaics (CPV). In this method a sidemountedconcentrator solar module structure is designed in which grating prism is used forconcentrating sunlight on solar cell. Diffraction grating is an optical device composed of a large number of closely spaced parallel slits or rulings. These rulings act as a series of narrow, closely spaced apertures through which light can pass. When light passes through a diffraction grating, it undergoes diffraction, which means the light is spread out into its constituent colors or wavelengths, creating a spectrum and then the diffracted lights will propagate inside the glass substrate and reach the solar cell on the edge of the glass. In the second method hybrid technique is used in which transmission grating and IR filter is used to concentrate required infrared range radiation on solar cell to improve its efficiency. After comparing both methods it has been observed that grating based Photovoltaic method is more efficient as compared to hybrid technique.
