Analysis of Prefluxing Method for Transformer Inrush Current Reduction

Ketan C. Gohil, Jatinkumar J. Patel, Niraj Solanki

Abstract

Inrush Current is a harmonic-rich current which flows in transformer when it is energized. Inrush current affect the winding of transformer by means of its structural deformation, induce the voltage distortion, and reduce the power quality. There are number of methods available for transformer inrush current’s reduction. Among them, the latest and emerging method is the prefluxing method. In this paper, same has been explained with its results of simulations in MATLAB/Simulink environment and its developed hardware. This paper successfully demonstrates the single-phase transformer’s operation characteristics in cooperation with prefluxing device. A hardware-based configuration has been performed to establish the conceptual debate and reorganize the leftover flux level from inside of the transformer core. This will improve the effectiveness of ZCD-based progressive switching inrush survivability. A MATLAB-based dynamic analysis of the same with and without device functionality is also shown. Plots of resulted values of Current of Prefluxing Device without Diode and Flux of Prefluxing Device without Diode are presented through simulation results in the article briefly.
