Abstract

Electrical power distribution system power quality improvement is a major issue. Controlling grid connected converters (GCCs) in adverse grid conditions is also a challenge. This condition cannot be ignored due to rapid growth in the use of inverter-interfaced renewable power generation sources and non-linear loads. The SRF (Synchronous reference frame)- PLL (Phase-locked loop) and extended self-tuning filter are simulated and compared under distributed power generation for mitigation of harmonics, reactive power compensation in PFC (power factor correction), and ZVR (zero voltage regulation) modes under nonlinear loads. Under ideal grid conditions, the SRF PLL provides fast and accurate phase detection. The SRF PLL has a simple structure that makes it easy to implement. On the other hand, the extended STF (self-tuning filter) operates in an unbalanced and distorted grid with frequency estimation. The simulation is performed in MATLAB Simulink.
