Improvement of Voltage Stability in Power System using STATCOM and SVC

Kushketu Kundan Srivastava, Ajay Kumar

Abstract

Modern power system is susceptible and widespread failures. With a rise in power demand, operation and planning of huge, interconnected power grid are getting more and more complex, so power system will subsided secure. In the operating environmental condition and conventional planning and operating methods can leave power grid exposed to instabilities. Voltage instability is one among the phenomena which have end in a major blackout. The abrupt development of restructuring and matter of voltage stability has become the serious concern in the deregulated power system. To take care of security of such systems, the desirable to plan suitable measures to the enhance power grid security and to increase voltage stability margins. FACTS devices (STATCOM & SVC) regulate the active and reactive power control also as adaptive to voltage-magnitude control simultaneously due to their flexibility and fast control characteristics. Installation of these devices in the suitable location can cause control in line flow and maintain the bus voltages in desired level then improve voltage stability margins. Performance evaluations are supported by the simulation results on bus system under different loading conditions using MATLAB.
