STATCOM in Power Systems: A Review

Abstract


This article presents a survey of the development of Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) technology and its applications in power industry. The study is based on research articles, manufacturers’ websites, magazines and also news reports. Recently completed and ongoing projects have been highlighted here to describe the application trend of STATCOM. Voltage support, transient stability, power transfer enhancing, power factor improvement, three phase voltage balancing, active filtering capabilities have been illustrated with relevant examples. The capability of STATCOM interfacing with energy storage-based solutions have been included here to visualize the future trend of this device.
