Aswathy C., Shanavaz K. T., Deepa M. S.

Abstract

Recognition of a person based on the iris structure has become a trending authentication method. Iris recognition systems have many advantages as compared to other authentication methods such as accuracy, reliability and uniqueness and hence it is used in many applications. The main applications are, access control in laboratories and factories, identification for Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs), banks etc., border control in airports and harbors. This paper deals with the review of main iris recognition algorithms. Image acquisition, segmentation, normalization, feature coding and feature matching are the major stages in an iris recognition system. A literature review of the most prominent algorithms that are used in each stage of the iris recognition system is presented here. Keywords: segmentation, circular Hough transform, active contour model, rubber sheet model, image registration, feature coding, Gabor filter, wavelet encoding, feature matching
