Compact Microstrip Patch Antennas Combining Sierpinski and Koch Fractal Geometries With Defected Ground Structure

Kritika Shrivastava, Pramod Kumar Singhal

Abstract

In this paper, a novel technique to compact the size of microstrip patch antennas is proposed. Based on experiments, it is found that by increasing iteration order of fractal geometries with defected ground structure, the resonant frequency of a patch antenna can be extremely lowered and this property can be employed to reduce the size of a microstrip patch antenna. Combination of Koch and Sierpinski fractal shapes are used to design antennas. In this technique, three iteration orders are used and 3rd iteration includes defected ground structure which greatly lowers resonant frequency as well as size of the antenna. Patches derived from combination of Koch and Sierpinski fractal shapes can be utilized in integrated low-profile wireless systems.
