Abstract

A multilevel inverter is a power electronic device which is capable of providing desired alternating voltage level at the output using multiple lower level DC voltages as an input. Multilevel inverter is widely used for high-power high-voltage applications. It can eliminate the need for the step-up transformer and reduce the harmonic content and lower EMI and higher dc link voltages. However, it has some disadvantages such as increased number of components, complex pulse width modulation control method, and voltage-balancing problem. The harmonic content of the output voltage waveform decreases as the number of output voltage increases. This paper presents a new topology with a reversing-voltage component in order to improve the multilevel performance by compensating the disadvantages as mentioned. The propose topology is implemented in single-phase and three-phase with different pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques, which requires less number of components, less carrier signals and gate drive circuit as compared to conventional multilevel inverters.
