On The Frequency & Transient Analysis of Non-Uniform Transformer Windings

Mohamed M. Saied

Abstract

This paper addresses the determination of the transient response and frequency characteristics of non-uniform transformer windings. It takes into account the winding’s internal mutual circuit parameters. The dependence of these elements on the location along the winding is incorporated in the governing Kirchhoff’s voltage and current equations. The unknown voltages and currents will then be determined through the application of algebraic solution techniques leading to closed-form expressions in the s-domain. They can then be used for investigating the winding’s frequency response and its input impedance as well as exploring possible resonance phenomena. These expressions will be numerically Laplace-inverted using the Fourier series approximation algorithm and the software Mathematica. The result will be the transient response of the winding’s voltages and currents. Investigations into several case studies are presented and discussed.
