Square Microstrip Antenna for Triple-Band Applications By Using Tunable Metamaterial

Prateek Diwan, Sarthak Singhal, Bimal Garg

Abstract

In this study, a square patch antenna with a modified tunable metamaterial is proposed. The metamaterial comprises rectangular notch loaded octagonal and triangular ring structures. The tunability is achieved by embedding two varactor diodes into the metamaterial to connect both ring geometries. The metamaterial is stacked over the patch to realize triple bands of operation. The overall footprint of the single band square antenna substrate is 70 × 70 mm2 with radiator dimensions of 0.24λ × 0.24λ at 2.4 GHz. The non-tunable metamaterial designed to resonate at 2.4 GHz has substrate dimensions of 80 × 80 mm2. The modified metamaterial has its resonances at 1.8, 2.1 and 2.4 GHz. The operating frequencies of the antenna with modified metamaterial are 1.824, 2.199 and 2.568 GHz. The gain of the antenna with metamaterial at resonance frequencies is -6.593, 2.803 and -4.238dB respectively. This antenna possessed advantages of multiple band operation and compact size.
