Design and Analysis of Microstrip Filtenna for 2.4 GHz Applications and Measurement of SAR over Human Head Model

Abstract


ABSTRACT

Multifunctional ability of modern devices leads to wideband frequency characteristics. A microstrip antenna is a considerable narrowband antenna and a method to increase its bandwidth as well as adding filtering property is studied.  In this study models are developed for 2.4 GHz band applications using filtering antenna concept that increases the bandwidth of the antenna and allows it to work as a filter to improve its frequency selectivity. In the initial stage, the rectangular microstrip antenna and the filter are designed separately then they are integrated into one unit as filtenna. To gain the enhanced bandwidth of filtenna, dimensional adjustment of patch and feed has been done in the mid-stage of designing. The rectangular microstrip antenna is designed with quarter-wave transformer for impedance matching and the filter is a third-order Chebyshev filter. Integrating the filter and antenna together makes the filter acts as a part of the antenna and the antenna acts as a new resonator in the filter. This model enhanced the bandwidth by about 72% and improved the frequency selectivity of the antenna. Finally, SAR calculation over human head model has been done. In the initial stage of SAR calculation, developing the virtual phantom model of human head with corresponding dielectric on CST Microwave Studio. A virtual phantom is placed at various coordinates nearby filtenna to measure the SAR. Calculated SAR values are less than 0.02049W/kg and found under the safe exposure limit. SAR limit provides the roadmap to determine the deleterious effects regarding human head model.
