Development and Performance Evaluation of Aluminium Based Supercapacitor

Abhilash ., Raji George

Abstract

Work carried out with a new approach in developing aluminium based supercapacitor. Supercapacitor is a clean green renewable energy source with high capacitance, energy density and power density; it can be used as alternate energy storage system instead of fossil fuels. Supercapacitors have limited applications due to their high cost. So in present work, aluminium based material was used as active material along with MWCNT, MnO2, TiO2 and Sulphur coated onto graphene sheet as current collector to form electrodes for the cell. Electrolyte used was mixture of AlCl3 and DMC solution. The prepared cell was tested for cyclic voltammetry, charging- discharging test to evaluate cell electrochemical behaviour. For the prepared cell, the best EDLC or supercapacitor behaviour with fast charging and discharging time was seen after the addition of aluminium sulphate as active material in certain weight ratio to the electrode material composition coated onto graphene electrodes. High power density (1182 W/kg), medium energy density (4.275 Wh/kg) and medium specific capacitance (14.01 F/g) are obtained from developed electrochemical cell. Keywords: EDLC, MWCNT, electrolyte, electrochemical cell, cyclic voltammetry
