PLASMONICS SURFACE RESONANCE AND ITS USAGE IN SENSOR

Sanjeev Kumar Raghuvanshi, Bidhanshel Singh Athokpam

Abstract

A theoretical study of plasmonics surface resonance with some of the condition required for its usage as sensors especially a bio sensor. In this article the condition for a surface Plasmon resonance is followed by a brief discussion of Fresnel’s equations in which the reflectance and transmittance of air to water propagation is compared with air to gold(metal) propagation giving an idea of what happens to the reflectance when the second medium changes. Next the formula for the surface Plasmon resonance’s wave number (k) along the interface is derived. For multiple layers, matrix method is used which is obtained followed by the reflectance spectra of the multilayers. The ratio of plasma frequency to frequency of propagation and its significance regarding the propagation of wave is discussed using a graph. A discussion of some main surface plasmonics resonance sensors characteristics are also listed out.
